PHP Women

PHPWomen is a user group specifically targeted toward the women in the PHP world. We do not wish to exclude men - rather to encourage women. They are not mutually exclusive after all.

Mission

Our aim is to provide a network of support and mentorship to women, help women become more involved with PHP, increase our numbers at conferences as speakers and attendees, and provide a “female friendly” atmosphere.

History

Starting out on October 8, 2006 as a call for the women of PHP to “stand up and be counted” by Ligaya Turmelle and Elizabeth Naramore, we have since formed an active community that will hopefully continue to grow and flourish for many years to come.

Why a Woman’s Site

The women in the PHP World tend to be few and scattered all over the world, rarely seeing other women at the various conferences, unconferences, user group meetings and social get togethers. By providing this site we hope that the women will not feel so alone and isolated. The men in the PHP World are a very welcoming and acceptable bunch, but sometimes it is nice to talk to another woman either for coding help or for support in the specific issues of being a woman in a male dominated field.

Re: Looking for some OOP PHP tuition. Offering

Thanks Lorna, I'll check those out!

I've got lots of material, but I am looking for some 1-2-1 lessons also to understand how I am doing and where I lack knowledge.

Loving it though

Thank you again

M

Re: Free Pass for Dutch PHP Conference

Unfortunately i won't be able to join you all for dinner on saturday. I will be going home saturday after the conference, because i don't want to be away from my daughter for too long. Have a nice evening everyone and see you all at DPC!

Re: Looking for some OOP PHP tuition. Offering

Hi Morena,

I'm not in London often enough to take you up on this but what kind of input do you need? I've learned a great deal from the ladies here even without meeting them and between us we can probably help you along the way. My advice for learning something new is that you choose a project (my favourite is usually a recipe website) and start building it using OO - if you get stuck then ask for help, and maybe even see if anyone has time to review your code.

Re: Free Pass for Dutch PHP Conference

Sorry, I'm horribly out of touch with the forums these days!

Yes, speakers dinner is Friday night. A PHPWomen dinner sounds fabulous I won't be able to join as I'm not sure what my other committments are but I hope everyone else is able to make it. Ladies - Juliette is a great host and you will have a wonderful evening I promise!

Looking for some OOP PHP tuition. Offering

Hi everyone

I'm looking for somebody who can give me private OOP PHP tuition.

I live in North West London and I am looking for somebody who can give me some lessons on weekends, at my house, or in a library or cafe in London.

I have been working with PHP for a bit and really like it. I need stronger knowledge and therefore I would apprecciate if somebody could help me understanding OOP more hopefully for a few lessons. I'm offering £12/hour.
(I know it's not a proper job advert, but I am still offering you a job!)

Re: Free Pass for Dutch PHP Conference

Yes, I would like to attend the dinner. I'm not that familiar with Amsterdam but am willing to try anything.

Re: Free Pass for Dutch PHP Conference

Rose: Congrats ! I look forward to meeting you at DPC.

Great suggestion from Elizabeth to do a PHP Women dinner. So I might as well pick up the hint and arrange it

As the speakers dinner will most likely be on the Friday, we can either do the Thursday evening or the Saturday. I'm guessing Saturday will probably be best as not everyone will be attending the tutorial day.
