What is Open Source?

Open Source is an exciting new approach to the design, development and distribution of software. Open Source started when programmers began collaborating online to build new technical platforms and systems. At the heart of the process was the community's willingness to share programming 'source code'. Collaborative's began to adopt the measures and it was considered a critical strategic element for operations.

Software language can be obtained and improved by any online developer. Where as commerical software licensing can cost thousands of pounds each year, Open Source ensures a better quality, flexible, reliable and cost effective strategy for any business. Linux, the worlds most powerful and secure Open Source operating system, was the first of many breakthroughs. On its release, Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer said, "I'd put the Linux phenomenon really as threat number one." Since then Open Source has grown into mainstream use in content management systems that include examples Wordpress and Drupal.
